Suffolk Highways Upcoming Works B1532 Kirkley Cliff, Lowestoft

17 April 2020

Suffolk Highways are planning to carry out road resurfacing works on Kirkley Cliff, Lowestoft in the period between the 4 and 11 May 2020 (excluding the weekend) during the hours of 9am and 4.30pm. Suffolk Highways estimate that the works will take approximately 2 days to complete. This will require a temporary road closure so they can carry out the works safely. Traffic cones may also be placed to prevent on-street parking so the work site is unobstructed.

As Suffolk Highways plan roadworks in advance, they schedule extra days to allow for bad weather or other delays beyond their control. If they need to make major changes to the work dates, they will update the information signs on site.

During the unprecedented measures we are all having to take at the moment, although Suffolk Highways have scheduled this work to take place on the date shown, circumstances may mean that the work start date may be changed. They will do their best to update you on any changes, but as you will appreciate, their resources are focused on keeping Suffolk’s highway network safe at this most challenging time as the service is critical to ensuring safe travel for our emergency and health services, and for those carrying out essential tasks.

A plan showing the diversion route for these works is attached with this post. When Suffolk Highways close the road and put a diversion in place, the route needs to be accessible to vehicles of all shapes and sizes. They make diversions as clear as possible by placing appropriate signing along the route. More information about diversion routes can be found on Suffolk Highways' webpage.

Please note: Suffolk Highways' staff follow a range of health and safety measures, including the two-metre social distancing rule and cleaning down equipment more frequently and regularly. If you see any of their staff inspecting or working on the highway, for your safety and theirs, please keep your distance to allow them to do their work safely.

Suffolk Highways will not be distributing letters to householders who may be affected by our works so anything you can do to update your community would be much appreciated, for example using any websites, Twitter or Facebook accounts you may use in your role. The latest updates on works can be found on Suffolk Highways' website at "Temporary road closures for Suffolk Highways roadworks” and on the OneNetwork website https://one.network/

There may be times that essential emergency works are required to take place on the highway network without advanced notice – you can follow Suffolk Highways on Twitter for the latest emergency roadwork updates

Update on the Ness Park

14 April 2020

Work will resume at the Ness in Lowestoft this week, after contractors Blakedown Construction Ltd advised they would be returning to site whilst adhering to Government safety advice.

Work on the site was suspended on 23 March however after careful consideration, Blakedown Construction now intend to return to site on Tuesday 14 April to continue with work. Government advice is that construction sites can remain open as long as work is conducted in a safe and appropriate manner and Blakedown Construction will be putting all necessary protection measures in place - their operatives will be able to work at a safe distance from each other and will travel to and from site in separate vehicles. The site remains closed to the public for health and safety reasons during the construction period and to ensure social distancing with the local community.

East Suffolk Council encourages businesses to apply for funding

3 April 2020

East Suffolk Council is now processing the payment of grants for local businesses provided by the government in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Eligible businesses are being asked to complete a straightforward online form which will capture the data required by central government and allow the Council to make payment to each eligible business as soon as possible.

As part of this process, and to ensure as many businesses as possible are aware of the funding available to them, East Suffolk Council is also writing to over 7,000 businesses who may be eligible for the grants - the Small Business Grant Fund or the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Fund. The Council will also promote the scheme through the media and online channels.

The first fund offers a grant of £10,000, announced by the Government to support small businesses (which receive small business rate relief or rural rate relief).  The second is a grant of either £10,000 or £25,000 depending on rateable value, for businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.

Once each business has completed the online form, they will receive an automated email to confirm receipt of the form.  The Council will then undertake verification checks and make payment of the grant as soon as possible.  Once payment has been submitted to the business an automated email will be sent to confirm payment has been made.

Cllr Craig Rivett, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said: “We are in unprecedented times and this funding is a lifeline for many local businesses. We have a responsibility to ensure they can access it as quickly as possible and by setting up a clear and straightforward online form, the application process will be as smooth as possible. We hope to encourage everyone who is eligible to apply and get the funding they deserve.”

Businesses with a rateable value of £51,000 or over are not eligible for this scheme. Businesses which are not ratepayers in the business rates system are not included in this scheme.

The online form and full details about how to apply with full eligibility criteria can be found at: https://www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk/covid-19-business-grant-funding.
